individual reflection

perfect for any individual who wants to learn more about themselves

explore personal values

This exercise helps you focus on what truly matters to you, providing clarity and direction.

start here

set out the placeholder cards and use them to differentiate your piles as you sort. proceed to each next step with the “value these (keep)” pile, which will get smaller and smaller until you arrive at your top 5-6 values

sort 1

read each value and do a quick sort (5 minutes or less) and sort out into 2 piles by asking, “Which of these do I value?” you will likely discard only a few cards in this process but it a first gut check

after this step: 40-50 cards left in keep pile

sort 2

further sort the “value these” pile, asking the question, “which values do i currently live vs. which are aspirational?” put the aspirational ones in the discard pile and move on to sort 3 with the keep pile

after this step: 25-35 cards left in keep pile

sort 3

sort 5

further sort asking “if I were to spend only 1 week on a desert island with a stranger, which of these values would show up?” This sort pulls you out of your everyday environment to see if values show up without your home, work and loved ones. Keep the values that would show up.

after this sort: 15-25 cards left in keep pile

sort 4

further sort asking “which do I value in myself AND others?” keep the pile of “i value these in both myself and others” as those things that you only value in yourself or only in others tend not to be your strongest values.

after this sort: 5-15 cards left in keep pile

At this point, your should be at about 10 values. the last sort may take the most time, considering “What are concrete examples of me living this value in the last week?” If you can’t think of one, it is likely not in the top 5. you can also ask yourself, “the next decision I make today, which value does it stem from?”

after this sort: 5-6 cards left in keep pile

congratulations!

you have arrived at your top 5 values. Write them on the my values card provided in the deck and keep in various places to remind and center yourself.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS.

  • yes! we have designed the cards and provided instructions on the website so that you can get a deep and introspective experience on your own. You can always reach out to us if you want to schedule a session with a coach to explore values further and see what else they connect to.

  • we sincerely believe that self-awareness and self-acceptance are foundational to confidence and growth in leadership. By putting names to the values you live each day, you unlock the next level of awareness and agency over your perspectives, thoughts, feelings and actions.

  • we love them, too! You can email us to purchase more at support@bettermeant.co

  • for individuals, we recommend at least an hour to make good progress. you may still refine over the next few days.

for partners or teams, we recommend a minimum of 90 minutes.

  • only you can know if they are “right”. After completing the exercise, we strongly recommend having the “my values” card available for 2 weeks and checking back frequently to see if you feel like your decisions and actions are in alignment with the words you chose or if you feel others are better.

  • having a top 5-6 is ok, but more than that is difficult to connect to on a daily basis. if you'd like support in refining, schedule a session with a coach and we’ll help you get there.
